The hotel was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States

An iconic destination and a designated historic landmark, it took its name from one of America’s greatest presidents: Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States and hero of the Civil War. Since then, this classic hotel has been a favored haunt of celebrities, politicians, and dignitaries alike, while its luxurious amenities remain welcoming to all. Its remarkable history adds to the magical allure of The US Grant, making it truly worthy of its legendary namesake.

The hotel has hosted many famous guests over the years, including Charlie Chaplin, John F. Kennedy, and Elvis Presley

The US Grant has seen a lot of history walk through its doors over the years. Great names like Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, Charles Lindbergh, John F. Kennedy, and Elvis Presley have all called the hotel home during their time in San Diego — the latter even famously recording at nearby radio station KFSD in 1956! In all, 12 Presidents and 5 former First Ladies also called the US Grant home during their time in San Diego.

On top of that, the Great White Fleet Association made the US Grant their home for their annual reunion dinners. The Great White Fleet was a term applied to the U.S. Navy’s battle fleet that circumnavigated the globe from 1907–09. The historic journey was planned by President Theodore Roosevelt to demonstrate America’s naval power to other nations and was seen as a symbol of America’s increasingly prominent role on the world stage.

To commemorate this voyage, the US Grant hosted the reunion dinner for nearly 35 years, up until 1974. Naval officers, lectures about naval history and geography during that era, and dignitaries from around the world attended the reception honoring veterans who served on those ships. The hotel also serves as an official remembrance site for USS Baltimore Sailors who made their way across the Pacific Ocean more than 100 years ago. Just imagine all of the incredible conversations and stories shared within these walls.
